Because of these teachings of Christ and the apostles, the Church cannot simply give a divorced person whose former spouse is still living permission to remarry. Consequently, the Church has the annulment process to investigate whether the marriage is valid in the first place. If it is valid, the person must honor Jesus’ teaching by not remarrying.
